Sister Sara Butler

2026 Jubilarian Celebrating 70 Years

Sr. Sara grew up in Toledo, Ohio where she belonged to Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral parish. She was educated by her parents, two devoted aunts, and the Ursuline Sisters in both elementary and high school. While a freshman at college, she heard one of our ST priests tell stories about our Founder, Father Judge, and our special mission, the “preservation of the Faith.” She wanted to be a missionary Sister, not a school teacher, and found the prospect of the “home missions” very appealing. After meeting some of the MSBT Sisters in New York City, she decided to apply.

In her early years in the community, Sister Sara was sent for advanced studies in theology- so, she would end up being a teacher after all! Her studies were interspersed with ministry assignments: taking parish census, teaching CCD, leading adult Bible studies, and training CCD teachers. After completing studies, she taught college theology, directed adult education in the Diocese of Mobile, AL and served two terms on the MSBT General Council.

A scripture passage that has accompanied her is Isaiah 42:16, “I will lead the blind on their journey, by paths unknown I will guide them. I will turn darkness into light before them, and make crooked ways straight.” Sister Sara was invited to teach theology at Mundelein Seminary (Archdiocese of Chicago) where she lived for a total of 17 years. In the tumultuous years after the Second Vatican Council, she was called on to “preserve the Faith” by teaching Christology to seminarians and the younger clergy! For seven years, she was again able to live in community while teaching at St. Joseph Seminary in the Archdiocese of New York. Since “retirement”, Sister Sara has lived at the MSBT Motherhouse in Philadelphia and served on the staff of the Mother Boniface Spirituality Center.

Sister Sara is grateful to God for her vocation as a Missionary Servant of the Most Blessed Trinity and for the witness of her Sisters in religion to a zealous practical charity. She is grateful for the many unexpected opportunities she has had to contribute to the Church’s life through participation in committee work, e.g., with the ST priests and Brothers on the common Rule of Life; with Anglican and Baptist partners in ecumenical dialogue; with the U.S. Bishops Committee for a Pastoral Letter on Women’s Concerns, for Lay Ministry, and for Doctrine; on the International Theological Commission; with the Academy of Catholic Theology, and many others. These committee assignments challenged her to wrestle with the some large questions of our day- the vocation of the laity, the role of women in the Church, the doctrine of the priesthood and the diaconate, the renewal of women’s religious life, the “gift” of authority, the sensus fidei, and the Marian doctrines. As a Missionary Servant, Sister Sara has been guided by our apostolic spirituality and taught to combine studies with “devotional knowledge” of the mysteries of our faith, to share that goal with her students and colleagues, and to share our love for Christ and the Church, and our missionary vocation with others.
